What about the Tuna Oil?

Recently a customer asked the following: "Regarding the Omega 3 fish oil, where is the tuna oil sourced from? I noticed that there is good information about the Hoki oil but not much about the tuna oil”. Valid point. The tuna oil comes from the South Pacific region.

As you probably know the tuna is a migratory fish so we will be keeping an eye on future oil in case any of the tuna is exposed to any radiation. These tests will be done before any is processed. Not a problem for the next few months as we have plenty of raw oil on hand.

Our tuna oil is a little different to most. In addition to it being highly concentrated it is also highly purified. Unlike most other fish oils our tuna oil goes through a proprietary preliminary step prior to concentration which eliminates all traces of mercury and other contaminants.

This involves a process whilst it is still in triglyceride form before being converted to an ethyl ester. The oil whilst in triglyceride form can handle a much higher temperature than an ethyl ester (about three times more) for a short period of time with no harm to the oil.

This enables the mercury and other contaminants to be distilled off the oil much more effectively than when this process takes place after conversion to ethyl ester which is the case with most concentrated oil products.

This is why we are able to achieve such high levels of purity and eliminate any possible contamination of heavy metals or PDBs/dioxins from the tuna component of our fish oil.

    Why do you guys want to mess with a winning formula. The anti inflammation abilities of the current blend is more than impressive. Can we just live well enough alone?

    We don't propose making any changes to the formula...but, we will just be doubly vigilant to ensure no radiation contamination finds its way into any of the raw tuna oil.  In that unlikely event we would make changes.    There will be no problem with the Hoki oil.

    Mary, all concentrated oils go through a purification process which reduces the contaminants and in the process of concentration of the Omega 3 content there are changes in the structure of the oil from triglyceride to ethyl ester.  Some manufacturers then convert back to triglyceride forms but it is slightly different from the natural form of triglyceride. 

    If this concentration process was not carried out the levels of Omega 3 would be quite low.  Also, with most fish it is necessary to get rid of the contaminants.  We are fortunate that we can get the best of both worlds by using a blend in which the high levels of Omega 3 is combined with the natural hoki oil which we are only able to use because of the natural purity of it and where it is harvested from. 

    There are components of the natural oil which are lost in the concentration and purification process which we have found to improve the anti-inflammatory properties.

    I too would love to hear some comments regarding the article above posted by Kiril regarding an increased risk of prostate cancer and Omega 3 fatty acids.

    Also, please confirm that with higher levels of monitoring, still no incidents of increased radiation in either the tuna or the Hoki used in the omega supplements.

    Hi Kiril,

    I honestly wouldn't put a lot of credence on that 'study'.  They even suggest that trans fatty acids may be OK.  There are other studies that support the benefits of Omega-3 fish oils for prostate.  I know of men who have been able to lower their PSA through high doses of Omega-3 fish oil.

    My PSA at 0.5 is exceptional for a man of 64 years of age and I have been taking four softgels a day for the last 10 years.

    Researchers from Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station found radioactive contamination from Fukushima in 15 of 15 Pacific bluefin tuna samples caught off the US West Coast around August 2011.

    Arnold Gundersen predicted this over a year ago & says this year the contamination in tuna will be even greater.

    This is a bit worrying as the tuna oil in your Omega 3 Premium fish oil which is a fantastic product comes from the South Pacific region.

    Any chance of offering a product again with just Hoki oil?

    We will continue with our 50/50 blend of Hoki and Tuna Oil, because of the anti-inflammatory properties this mixture provides.

    I just noticed  SOYBEAN is also mention in the ingredients. Had no idea and is rather a surprise. I was trying to get away from soybean oil in my diet  for a medical reason.. Could you please tell us the ratio between that oil and the tuna and hoki'

    So why is there Soy Bean in our Omega 3? There is a lot of misleading information on the Net about soy and its ingredients. Soy contains isoflavones. Isoflavones play a crucial role in health, and not just for women, but for men also. The active ingredients are genistein and diadzein. These may even help to, for example, possibly contribute to the prevention of prostate cancer in men, so you see there are good reasons to include soy in your diet. It may also be good for hormonal balancing, as it isn't a source of high intake direct oestrogen.

    There is an abundance of different opinions and research about soy. You need to be careful and look at the type of research design that is used, the type of soy being researched, the amounts used in a study design and also who is doing the research in the first place. Of course certain forms of soy, like any other nutrient or food, can be harmful when used in excess amounts over a long period of time. However, there are ways to use soy in a manner that can promote healthful benefits and is safe in the longer term. Very briefly, soy should never be taken in excessive amounts, especially some soy byproducts and users of soy should try to stick to traditional, non-GMO and organic soy foods (ie: miso, tempeh). Soy should be also be avoided by certains groups, ie: those who have a soy sensitivity or those who have cancer, as soy may be contraindicated.

    There are many types of soy out there in the market. We use mixed tocopherols which are extracted from soy beans in trace amounts in the Omega 3/DHA Fish Oil, which are non GE. The amount is so small that it is negligible. We do include all information about our ingredients on both our website and bottle packaging. The mixed tocopherols are an important part of the antioxidant blend to preserve freshness of the fish oil. Our products have been scientifically researched for efficacy and safety - we would never promote or sell a product that could harm our customers.

    I have done a calculation for the standard fish oil (the amount will be even less than for the premium and ultra versions).

    The total % of the antioxidant blend added amounts to 0.7% (7 mg)of each fish oil capsule.

    The percentage of soy will be less than this. Unfortunately, the exact composition of the Antioxidant blend is the proprietary information of the manufacturer so we cannot provide an exact amount of soy. The soy allergen statement is provided because one of the components of the antioxidant blend is Vitamin E tocopherols, which is derived from soy beans.
